Pain in the throat is a fairly common symptom and encountered more commonly in children sometimes even in adults and it can vary from a mild niggle or an irritation in the throat to a severe pain and difficulty in swallowing. So it can be quite debilitating for the patient because of that. Now if it were to be only an irritation in the throat all you need to do is a good salt water gargle. An alkaline salt water gargle will suffice, you don’t need to do much else. This itself gives very good clearance of your throat problem. On the other hand if it is an infection, the infection has to be treated accordingly. So once that is identified the infection it can be in the tonsil, it can be in the back of the tongue or in the throat it has to be addressed. So an anti-infective treatment has to be instituted. Supportive therapy in the form of painkillers may need to be given in the initial period. Sometimes anti-edema measures giving medication to reduce the swelling which can be quite difficult for the patient who has it has to be treated. On the other hand if there is something like a peritonsillar abscess that has to be drained. Abscesses in any part of the body have to be drained of the pus which is collected. So also in the region of the tonsil layer. So a pus collection outside of the tonsil we refer to as quinsy or peritonsillar abscess has to be drained and it is an emergency. We cannot allow it to carry on. We don’t want the pus to rupture inside and go into the more sensitive areas of the body causing serious infections and problems. So it is better to do that as soon as it’s identified. These are the ways of managing a sore throat. Thank you.
