Erectile dysfunction is a common problem. About half of men over the age of 40 experience some level of erectile dysfunction.
Lifestyle modifications that may improve erectile dysfunction include weight loss, regular exercise, and a healthy diet with plenty of vegetables and fruits. If you’re a smoker, stop smoking. If you have poorly controlled blood pressure, talk to your doctor and get the blood pressure under control. Same thing if you’re a diabetic.
Here at UVA, we offer many types of treatments for erectile dysfunction, including oral medications, injection therapy, vacuum devices, and surgical approaches such as implantation of penile prosthesis.
We also offer penile doppler studies to get an accurate diagnosis of the source of erectile dysfunction. The main surgical approach for erectile dysfunction includes the implantation of a penile prosthesis. This is a procedure that, while it is a major procedure, patients get to go home the same day. They will recover for a few weeks with some pain, some soreness, but after about four to six weeks, they can come back to the office and learn how to use their device. And from then on, they’re able to be sexually active.
