Why should we avoid these 5 things when a child is having cough or cold :

✅ Banana : It’s a superfood. There is no scientific evidence of it causing increase in phlegm or mucus. It can be safely given to a child during sickness. If you have doubt of it being a cold temperature food, you can dip it in a bowl of warm water for 5-10 min before giving it to your child.

✅ Bathing: Bathing with warm water actually thins out all the thick mucus or phlegm stuck inside the child’s airways, thus clearing the breathing passage. Moreover, it makes the child feels fresh and active and helps in a sound sleep.

✅ Vapour rubs: Most of the commercially available vapour rubs contain menthol which is more harmful than beneficial when it’s vapours are inhaled through breathing. Best to avoid in a child less than 6 years.

✅ Antibiotics: Most of the cough cold symptoms are due to viral infections. Antibiotics don’t act against viruses. They, in fact, decrease the immunity further, if given unnecessarily. Only symptomatic medicines are recommended.

✅ Overclothing: Wearing excessive layers of warm clothes doesn’t prevent the child from catching cold, as the virus enters the body through person’s nose and mouth. Overclothing makes the child feel uncomfortable and suffocated as their BMR is high. Moreover, it can cause dehydration and rise in body temperature, thus adding to the symptoms. As a rule, just one layer extra what the adults are feeling to wear, is the right thing to do.
