People who want to go back to basics or don’t want to ingest too many chemicals and some people who want to economize, especially in this economic climate. Why pay hundreds of dollars for the relief that a drug can provide when something as simple as a few vegetables can affect the same result?

Smoking – Tobacco can dry up the mouth and the throat making symptoms of heartburn much worse.
Alcohol – While not only causing the stomach to produce more acid, it also relaxes the esophageal muscles facilitating the passage of stomach acid.
Fatty foods – Foods that are high in saturated fat, and general junk food, can trigger acid reflux.
Milk – Although it may seem evident that milk can help, most people report that even though it initially soothes the pain, it soon returns with a vengeance.
You can see from this brief and non exhaustive list that there are many things that can cause acid reflux and trigger an attack. Looking at the situation in a more positive light, cutting out alcohol, cigarettes and fatty foods can only be positive from a health perspective. And if the change in your lifestyle helps the issue of acid reflux, all the better.

Apples – Simple and good for you. Try one when you have an attack.
Apple cider vinegar – It may seem weird that using an acid to counter acid would be effective, but many people have reported that a teaspoon of this with half a glass of water with your meal helps prevent acid reflux.
Carrots – Again a simple item, but seems to calm the stomach eaten raw.
Fennel Seeds – Known to help with stomach cramps, chewed slowly can help calm your symptoms.
Ginger – Long lauded as a calming substance it also can absorb excess stomach acids. Available in tablet form as it has quite a strong flavor.
As we’ve seen, many of the natural cures are simple, and many times, effective. If you can find relief as easily as eating an apple and reducing the fat in your diet, you’ve done yourself a favour in more ways than one.
