00:19 – Causes of ear pain
Ear wax is normally semi-solid and very fluid and soft. But sometimes this ear wax becomes solid (impacted) and becomes flaky which can cause ear pain. Inserting foreign objects like ear picks, earbuds, and even toys in the ear can also cause ear pain and decreased hearing. Ear pain can be also caused due to bacterial like swimmer’s ear (otitis externa) and fungal infections like otomycosis. These conditions can also cause ear discharge, itching, buzzing sounds as well. There are some rare causes of ear pain that are considered referred pains that are induced by dental issues. These dental issues include infected teeth, dental abscesses (puss collection in the mouth). Other causes include recurring tonsillitis, laryngitis, and temporomandibular joint issues (jaw bone issues). Rarely ear pain can also cause due to cancerous or non-cancerous tumors. These can cause pain, swelling, and discharge.

02:19 – Causes of ear discharge and eardrum perforation
Ear discharge can happen because of various reasons such as conditions like swimmer’s ear and otomycosis which occurs when water enters the ear canal and stays there. Another reason is the use of cotton buds after the water enters the ear canal. The main reason for ear discharge happens because of a middle ear infection which builds up fluids in the ear canal and can lead to the perforation of the eardrum. Another reason for eardrum perforation can be acoustic trauma which is induced by loud noises such as firecrackers, gunshots, or loud explosions. Rapid changes in the air pressure in the environment can cause eardrum perforation as the pressure on the middle ear changes in comparison to the external environment. This happens during air travel and scuba diving. Road accidents can also cause eardrum perforations.

03:29- Symptoms of eardrum perforation
Eardrum perforation causes ear pain. The ear pain is sharp if the eardrum perforates due to external causes but if it perforates due to infections then the pain is observed to be reduced. Affected people may also observe the sensation of air coming out of the ear when they blow their noses. Giddiness is also a symptom of eardrum perforation.

03:59 – Treatment of perforated eardrum
To treat eardrum perforation, the ear must be kept dry and nothing should be inserted in the ear unless advised by the doctor. Consult an ENT specialist and take medicines and necessary precautions instructed by them. Most eardrum perforations caused by traumatic episodes or a single instance of infection heals by itself. If ignored for a prolonged time this can cause serious complications and can lead to surgery. This can lead to loss of hearing. In some cases, it can lead to chronic discharges and serious infections.
